Fall Haul!

True story: I moved to a town that doesn’t have a book store!
I know, I know, what was I thinking?! Well, I wasn’t. I honestly didn’t even think about it because I was so wildly naive to the idea that a town of over 10,000 people wouldn’t have a bookstore of some kind. I guess they sell books at the grocery store and Walmart, but I don’t think that counts.

Thankfully, I have the time to drive the hour or so to the next big town over and hit up the bookstore there, which is exactly what I did this week! Warning: this is dangerous because you will feel you have to buy ALL THE BOOKS because the only other chance you will have is if you order them on Amazon.

Needless to say, I spent more than I intended. These are the books I bought, and why:

Three Wishes by Liane Moriarty

I honestly don’t know anything about this book other than Liane Moriarty wrote it, and what was all I needed to know. I pretty much have devoured all the other books she has written, even the ones that are less popular, so I have full confidence that I will love this book as well.
What to try out a Liane Moriarty book? The first one I read and loved was The Husband’s Secret.

The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith

This book was published in 2013, so I know I am way behind the times here, but I still haven’t read it. Why is that surprising? Well I am a HUGE Harry Potter fan, and Robert Galbraith was quickly outed as none other than J.K. Rowling. This series is said to be very adult and very dark, but I simply can’t resist. Based on the fact that I thoroughly enjoyed J.K. Rowling’s other very dark and very adult book, The Casual Vacancy, I think I’ll love The Cuckoo’s Calling.

Bridge of Clay by Markus Zusak

This was really the only new release that I picked up with this haul. Sticking with the theme so far of authors I love, I absolutely adored Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief. i have heard that Bridge of Clay is a whole different ball game, so I’m prepared for something different, but I can’t wait to fall into this man’s storytelling again.

Being Mortal by Atul Gawande and When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi

These books have been on my list for a while, but this month I start a position as a nurse practitioner on a geriatric and palliative care team. These books both examine mortality and the experience of death, When Breath Becomes Air from personal experience, and Being Mortal from a health care analysis angle. These nonfiction picks had to come home with me because I know I have so much to learn from both perspectives they offer.
